Drs. Fauci, Walensky testify before Senate on U.S. omicron response

As new infections rise and hospitalizations increase, top U.S. healthcare leaders will be testifying before the Senate Tuesday.
Senate Health Committee will listen to testimony by Dr. Anthony Fauci, White House chief medical adviser, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky. Also, Dr. Janet Woodcock is acting Food and Drug Administration commissioner.
Dawn O’Connell is the assistant secretary for preparedness and emergency response at Department of Health and Human Services. She also testifies.
The hearing takes place as the CDC is under attack for how it has communicated the pandemic to the public, and in particular its advice on quarantine. Although the CDC reduced Covid-related isolation to just five days, it didn’t recommend that people be tested prior to being released from isolation.
As new cases were rising across the nation, the Biden administration was also criticised for not having enough testing facilities nationwide during busy holidays.
Fauci may be asked questions regarding how vaccines have performed against this highly-mutated Omicron variant. Omicron can evade vaccine protection. Although it is less contagious than other strains, the Omicron variant appears to have less serious symptoms. Researchers continue collecting data.
Recently, the FDA shortened the waiting time. PfizerAnd ModernaIn order to boost the availability of booster shots for five months and increase protection within communities, the U.S. government has increased the amount of shots that are available.
According to CNBC’s analysis of Johns Hopkins University data, the U.S. reports an average seven-day high number of new infections at 750,000 per day. This is a record-breaking pandemic and 53% more than the previous week.
