(Reuters) – Lawmakers and activists reacted to President Joe Biden’s and Vice President Kamala Harris’s Tuesday calls for U.S. voter rights reforms. This includes, if needed, getting rid of the congressional rules that requires 60 senators support majority legislation.

DERRICK JOHNSON, PRESIDENT & CEO, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE (NAACP)

Our democracy is in its last hour. America could soon disappear if President Biden doesn’t apply the same urgency to voting rights that he applied for infrastructure and BBB.

Today’s speech by President Biden was a powerful one. It is time for the administration and Congress to follow through with their promises. Voting rights should not simply be a priority — it must be THE priority.”

JUDITH BLACK DIANIS EXECUTIVE Director, ADVANCEMENT PROJECT

“While today’s address by President Biden to Georgia rings the alarm over voting rights in the United States, we must put out that fire immediately by amending the Senate rules regarding the filibuster so voting rights legislation can be passed.  This moment is urgent

CHUCK SCHUMER is the U.S.SENATE MAJORITY LEADER

The Senate has to make an informed decision about the way we are going to protect democracy. If we don’t want to do the hard work necessary to ensure democracy wins, then it is impossible to be content with thinking that democracy will prevail in the end. To protect democracy we must take action and then move on.

JOHN CORNYN (U.S. REPUBLICAN SENSATOR)

They are not going to be successful. This will be yet another case of President Biden, his party, overpromising but underdelivering.”

ADAM SCHIFF, U.S. DEMOCRATIC RESPONDATIVE

“The filibuster, and the right for people to vote, are not equals. Both are essential to democracy. Both allow a minority of people to disregard the will and dictate the rules. When it comes to choosing between one or the other it’s not hard. To ensure that democracy continues to thrive, the filibuster has to go.
