(NASDAQ) announced Wednesday that it had removed several copies of Wordle from its App store. Wordle is a website-only game which has enjoyed a surge in popularity due to celebrity endorsements like Jimmy Fallon.
This once-a-day online game of words, created by Josh Wardle in October, cannot be played via a mobile application and can only currently be played on Josh’s website.
However, developers made identical versions of similar apps to capitalize on the rising demand. Users were unaware and drove up downloads.
Wordle! is the last product left on the App store with this title as of Wednesday. It was created over four years ago by Steven Cravotta and it’s still available.
In recent weeks, Josh Wardle’s game flooded Facebook (NASDAQ) and Twitter (NYSE:), as users posted scores. The game gives players six chances to guess the secret word of the day, made up five letters.
You can play the game for free on any website.
