MELBOURNE, (Reuters) – Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic issued a lengthy statement Wednesday. It explained why he wasn’t in isolation following testing positive for COVID-19 last December. He also stated that his agent had made a mistake when filling in his Australian travel declaration.

Alex Hawke, Australia’s immigration minister was contemplating whether to remove the number 1 tennis player from his visa before the Australian Open. This was amid controversy regarding whether the Australian COVID-19 vaccine regulations allowed him to qualify for medical exemptions.

Djokovic posted a statement to his Instagram account, “I want you to know that I tried my best to ensure safety for everyone”

He was asked about his Australian Travel Declaration, where he needed to declare whether he’d traveled within 14 days after arriving in Australia. However, his agent had accidentally marked the wrong box.

Djokovic explained that the travel declaration was issued by my support staff on my behalf. “As I stated to immigration officials at my arrival, my agent also submitted it on my behalf. My agent deeply apologises for my administrative error of ticking an incorrect box concerning my past travels prior to coming here,” Djokovic added.
