Microsoft hires key Apple engineer to design server chips

(Reuters) – Microsoft Corp Bloomberg News reports that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ) has hired an engineer who can design chips to power its servers.

According to the report, Mike Filippo is a chip industry veteran who has worked at Apple for more than two years.

According to Reuters, a source said that Microsoft was developing internal processors for its cloud-computing servers and Surface line personal computers. This information was provided by Reuters on December 2020.

For its Azure cloud computing services, as well as Surface PCs, the cloud computing industry’s heavyweight depends heavily on Intel (NASDAQ;) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:) Inc.

According to the report, Filippo’s hiring suggests that Microsoft has been accelerating its efforts to make chips at home for Azure cloud computing servers.

According to Filippo’s LinkedIn profile, Filippo started as a chip designer for AMD, in 1996.

Reuters reached out to Microsoft and Apple for comments but they did not respond immediately.
