(Reuters) -Pfizer Inc announced Wednesday that booster doses for its COVID-19 vaccine could be given in conjunction with the pneumonia vaccine. The vaccine produced strong immune reactions in patients 65 years and older in a study.

In May, the study was initiated to test the next generation pneumococcal conjugate vaccination, PREVNAR 20. A third dose of Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 was administered in the same group. It involved 570 patients.

It was done to determine the safety of this combination as well as the response to infection after the addition of pneumonia vaccine to COVID-19.

According to the company, responses to PREVNAR 20, and the booster dose of COVID-19 were comparable when administered together with or without placebo.

These data support the possibility of administering PREVNAR 20, and COVID-19 simultaneously, which could reduce the need to visit doctors or pharmacies to get recommended immunizations. Pfizer (NYSE:) said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved PREVNAR 20 in June 2013 to protect adults from most serious invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia.

Participating in this study were those who completed the late-stage COVID-19-vaccine study of the company and had not received the second dose within six months.
