BEIJING, (Reuters) – China stated on Thursday it hopes that the United States will create the conditions for trade cooperation after Chinese imports of U.S. products in 2016 fell below the target in a Trump-era deal.

China failed to fulfill its “Phase 1” promises to increase U.S. imports by $200Billion between 2020-2021 and 2017, compared to 2017. The target was only reached by 60% by November 2021 according to data from the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Shu Jueting, spokesperson at Commerce Ministry said that China “has worked hard since the agreement was in effect to overcome numerous adverse factors such as the global recession, a pandemic and supply chain disruptions” and had pushed for its implementation from both parties.

Shu stated that the United States should create an atmosphere conducive to trade cooperation between the two countries. He also said that communication is being maintained by the trade teams of the respective countries.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stated Tuesday that the U.S. would continue to pressure China regarding the necessity of enforcing the entire trade agreement, before discussing extension discussions.
