NEW YORK, (Reuters) – Eric Adams, New York City’s Mayor, has resigned to a position overseeing his security. This was just days after he was named deputy commissioner for the U.S. largest police department.

The Times reports that Bernard Adams, who is an ex-police sergeant with the New York Police Department will now be executive director of mayoral safety. His salary ranges from $210,000 to $210,000. It added that he was previously a parking administrator for Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond.

In his capacity as NYPD deputy Commissioner, the 56 year-old would have been able to make $240,000. According to the Times, the security director position falls under the Department’s structure, which he left after 20 years of service.

Requests for comments were not answered by the mayor’s office immediately.

A waiver will be required from Conflicts of Interest Board to hire, which is the city agency charged with upholding government ethics.

Mayor Adams is a former officer captain and took office Jan. 1. On Sunday, Adams reacted to concerns about nepotism by stating that his office was in the process of clearing his brother’s appointment to the ethics board.

His security operation must be unique in order to prevent anarchy or issues of white supremacy. He also plans on using the subway as his only means of transportation and will remain in the public eye.

My brother knows me. He is my brother. He is a twenty-year veteran. “He was an exceptionally successful community affairs officer,” he stated. “It is very personal security and I don’t want my life being taken by someone else if I must.”
