Polish scientists find gene that doubles risk of serious COVID -Breaking

WARSAW, (Reuters) – Polish scientists discovered a gene which more than doubles your risk of developing severe COVID-19-related illness. This discovery could be used to help doctors find people most vulnerable.

Researchers hope to identify those most at risk and encourage them to have shots.

Adam Niedzielski, Health Minister at the Ministry of Health stated that it took more than one year to find a gene which is responsible for predispositions to become seriously ill with coronavirus.

“This is a sign that we’ll be able in the future to…identify people who are predisposed to seriously suffer from COVID.”

Researchers from Medical University of Bialystok discovered that genetics was fourth in determining the severity of COVID-19. This is after weight, age and gender.

Marcin Moniuszko (the professor responsible for the project) stated that the gene was found in approximately 14% of Polish people. This compares to between 8-9% in Europe and 27% India.

Studies have shown that genetic factors play a significant role in the severity of COVID-19.

British scientists announced in November that they have identified a variant of the gene which may increase lung disease risk from COVID-19.
