SYDNEY, (Reuters) – Qantas Airways Ltd said Thursday that it had reduced about a third its planned domestic and international capacity for the March quarter in order to meet travel demand following a surge in COVID-19 infection rates.

According to the airline’s financial year ending in June, it will provide additional details about the effects of these changes in its half-year results due out in February.

Qantas does not have to make material capacity adjustments for its fourth quarter, the company stated.

In the third quarter of 2018, 70% of pre-COVID-19 domestic capacity will be utilized, down from 102% in the prior forecast. At a time where Australia is experiencing record COVID-19 numbers due to Omicron infections, this airline stated that it will run 70%.

Due to stricter travel restrictions in Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand Qantas said that international capacity will drop to 20% from pre-COVID-19 levels of 30%.

Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce released a statement saying that although we are able to expand capacity should demand rise earlier than expected, it still amounts to 70% domestic flying. It’s also a quantum improvement over the levels only months ago.”

His prediction was that domestic and international flights would be available for Easter in April, so early bookings are encouraged.
