(Reuters] – Thursday’s statement by the U.S. Republican Party indicated that it might withhold participation in presidential debates hosted by the Commission on Presidential Debates because of concerns over fairness. The concern stems from decades of tradition and is upsetting.

Ronna McDaniel, Chair of the Republican National Committee wrote to the commission that has been running presidential debates since 1988. She stated that the party is considering changing its rules in order to make sure its candidates are not present the debates. This was due to concerns over “whether or not the CPD credibly could provide an impartial and fair forum for presidential discussions.”

She indicated that future Republican presidential nominees would be encouraged to take part in fair and balanced debates.

Republicans accuse the Debate Commission of favoring Democratic Party Candidates.

McDaniel along with other members of the party asked last year for the Commission to make changes to its operations and to how they held the discussions.

McDaniel indicated that McDaniel could announce the RNC’s rule change at a forthcoming party meeting.
