San Francisco (Reuters), Canada’s automotive safety regulator announced Thursday that it is investigating Tesla Model 3 (NASDAQ) and Model Y heating systems after receiving 16 complaints from customers about their performance during the cold season.

Transport Canada expressed concern that malfunctioning heating/air-conditioning systems could cause windshield fogging/defrosting, and thus driver visibility.

Transport Canada must notify the company and any current owners if there is a danger to the safety of someone. … These notices are commonly referred to as ‘safety recalls,’” it said.

Tesla was informed by the regulator about its investigation.

Reuters reached out to Tesla for comment but they did not reply. In 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted, “Model Y heat pump is some of the best engineering I’ve seen in a while.”

According to Drive Tesla Canada (a Tesla news source), a number of Tesla owners have complained about heat pump failures in extremely cold temperatures. This report stated that heating issues occurred after Tesla replaced heat pumps with defective sensors early last year in 2020-2021 Model 3 vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (the U.S. safety regulator) did not immediately comment.
