Jane Fraser, CEO Citigroup has some explaining to make.
Her bank shares fell 2% while the KBW Bank Index jumped by 37%. The KBW Bank Index also soared 37%. This was due to strong capital markets revenues and increased expectations of rising interest rates.
Citigroup trades at less than its tangible book value, the measure of how much a bank is worth if liquidated. This has been going on for many years.
Fraser assumed the role of predecessor Michael Corbat one year ago. Her mandate was to increase returns at America’s third largest bank in terms of assets.
She has decided to leave less lucrative parts of her firm’s global empire in order to do this. She made her first strategic decision to exit 13 markets in Asia and Europe. Since then, she announced plans to move to South Korea and Mexico. Analysts will be interested to inquire if her divestiture plan is complete.
The bank announced last month that share repurchases would be suspended to comply with regulatory requirements. This surprised investors. Analysts are likely to ask Fraser when and how much buybacks will be resumed.
This year’s 11% increase in shares of the bank is comparable to the rise in the KBW Bank Index.
