Prayagraj, UTTAR PRADSH (Reuters) – Hundreds of thousands are expected to gather at the Ganges Riverbanks on Friday in order to take a holy bathe despite a 30 fold increase in coronavirus infections in the last month.

Many devotees will take holy baths in the sacred river running through West Bengal’s eastern state. This state reports the highest number of cases after Maharashtra in West Bengal.

Uttar Pradesh is the state with the largest population. Thousands of Hindu devotees will be gathered at the Ganges River in Prayagraj to celebrate Makarsankranti.

A crowd of maskless devotees marched toward the river Friday morning while vendors offered flowers and other products on either side.

Record-breaking levels of coronavirus were achieved by a large religious gathering held in northern India last year.

Although the country continues to see an increase in coronavirus-related cases due to Omicron, which is highly transmissible, hospitalizations have been low and most people are able to recover at home.

The health ministry announced Friday that 264,202 coronavirus cases had been reported in India over the past 24 hours. This brings India’s total to 36.58 millions.

The ministry reported that deaths from COVID-19 increased by 315 and total mortality now stands at 485,350.
