JOHANNESBURG, (Reuters) – Unvaccinated individuals infected by the Omicron coronavirus variant may not be as susceptible to serious illness or death as those who have been vaccinated. A South African study revealed this on Friday.

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Western Cape, conducted the study. This research has not been peer-reviewed.

Omicron has been shown to be less dangerous than other variants, with a proportionally lower number of hospitalizations and deaths.

Scientists have been trying to find out whether this can be attributed to past or higher levels of immunity, Omicron or Omicron intrinsically being less harmful.

According to the study, about 25% of Omicron’s reduced severity of disease was due to the characteristics of Omicron itself.

The study stated that severe COVID-19 results were lower in the Omicron-driven waves, mainly due to immunity conferred by previous infection and/or vaccine, however, intrinsically less virulence could account for approximately 25% less risk of serious hospitalisations or death than Delta.
