Storm supplies were in short supply as Southeast residents searched for emergency supplies. Crews raced to repair roads and streets as the Midwest’s winter storm approached.

Virginia: A blizzard has left thousands of motorists trapped on clogged highways earlier this month, outgoing Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency and urged people to take the approaching storm seriously. In North Carolina, certain stores had to be empty of all essentials like milk and bread.

The fast-moving storm dropped snow on a wide swathe of Midwest by Friday. This caused travel problems and forced scores of schools to shut down or move to online education. Iowa was the worst affected. Brad Small, National Weather Service meteorologist stated that the Des Moines airport saw over 14 inches of snow. A large swathe of central and southern Iowa also recorded snowfalls between 9 and 14 feet.

Perhaps as a glimpse of what lies ahead, the Iowa State Patrol reported that they had assisted 207 motorists and that there had been 78 accidents in just four hours, between Friday at 5 and Monday at 9 pm. According to the Des Moines Register.

Indiana Michigan Power announced that more than 200 workers had been dispatched to Appalachian Power Company in support of the storm. The company also stated that Virginia and West Virginia would host them for what it expected to be an intense storm, with “several inches” of snow, sleet, and ice, as well as strong gust winds.

Forecasters predicted that parts of Tennessee could see as much as six inches (15 centimeters), of snow. Northern Mississippi and the Tennessee Valley regions of Alabama may also experience light snowfalls. Any precipitation that falls across large areas could cause freezing, which can make driving dangerous and difficult.

Travis Wagler stated that he had not seen such an oversupply at his Abbeville hardware store, South Carolina in at least two winters.

Wagler, Abbeville Hardware, said that they were selling “everything you would expect”: not only sleds but salt, shovels, and firewood. This region could face ice accumulations of up to a quarter of an inch (0.66 centimeters), on trees and power lines. It is possible that this will lead to days without electricity.

Winter storm watches were issued from north to metro Atlanta. They also extended westwards towards Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and the North. This included parts of 10 US states such as Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, and Ohio. There could be travel issues in metro Atlanta. About 2 inches (5 cm) of snow made it impossible for traffic to slide. The event, still called Snowmaggedon, was a result of slip-sliding that occurred in 2014.

According to a Saturday advisory by the National Weather Service, Atlanta is likely to experience a mixture of ice-like snow.

Dawsonville Hardware is located approximately 60 miles (95km) north Atlanta. Owner Dwight Gilleland stated that by noon on Friday, he was out of heaters. There were only five salt-and-sand bags left.

He said, “I believe the pandemic is making people more anxious than usual.”

A major U.S. airport hub for American Airlines – Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina – leads the list of cancellations for Sunday at U.S. airports.

Possible power outages and travel problems could be exacerbated by any coating of ice — and winds gusting to 35 mph (55 kph), the National Weather Service said.

“Hopefully, it will deliver but it may overdeliver,” stated Gov. Georgia. “We don’t know,” stated the Georgia Governor. Brian Kemp made the announcement about storm preparations. As a result, he declared an emergency. Crews immediately began to treat major highways and roads in North Georgia.

Gov. Henry McMaster, a neighbor in South Carolina issued an emergency declaration, stating that the state will likely feel the impacts of Sunday’s major winter storm.

He stated that “there is potential for very hazardous conditions due to accumulations of snow and ice, which would likely lead to power outages across all parts of the state.”

Because Covid-19 caused shortages of workers in North Carolina, Winston-Salem had to hire workers from other departments. He said that volunteers also pitched in as the city increased its preparations for winter weather.

North Carolina Governor. Roy Cooper issued an emergency directive and advised people to return home if the storm hits. According to the state highway agency, crews may not be able to respond as fast as usual due labor shortages.

After its weekend-long dip in the Southeast, the storm was expected to move into the Northeast, dropping snow, rain, and sleet around densely populated Eastern Seaboard.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will see many schools and businesses close Monday, helping to reduce travel issues. Also, temperatures expected to reach the 40s could cause problems for some.
