Obsidian Images is a digital photo portal that the Obsidian Collection offers to consumers. It will now offer NFTs for rare photos of Martin Luther King Jr. taken during his 1966 historic trip to Chicago. Captured by the legendary John Tweedle, the first African American photographer hired by a major metropolitan newspaper, the NFTs chronicle King challenging Chicago’s slumlords, institutional racism, and Mayor Richard J. Daley himself, as well as King speaking to a crowd at Soldier Field and a fundraiser for the movement at Chicago’s iconic International Amphitheatre that drew locals and celebrities alike, including Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Mahalia Jackson.

Non-fungible tokens, also known as NFTs, are digital images that can easily be purchased and sold via blockchain technology. Obsidian initially will offer five images by Tweedle that are part of an extensive collection owned by author, entrepreneur and philanthropist Hermene Hartman, publisher of N’Digo magazine and NDigo.com, and the host of N’Digo Studio, a television show and podcast. The images were bequeathed to Hartman by Tweedle’s widow following his death in 1981. NFTs from King will go up for auction in the NFT market.

John got to know him intimately. He took photographs that no other person could take.
Tweedle was unique in that he wore five cameras around the neck to shoot for various news agencies, such as The Daily News and Jet magazine. “One of those was John’s personal camera,” Hartman said. “These are those photos.”

Angela Ford (Chicago entrepreneur) created the Obsidian Collection and launched it in 2017. Obsidian digitizes archival photos and content of Black photographers, newspapers and organizations for licensing and permission.

Obsidian will become the gate to NFTs of historic black history such as these.

The most important thing is that these rare collectibles can be made available for new generations through new media.
The Obsidian Collection, a virtual platform for Black culture, provides access to historical, artistic, cultural and cultural images sourced from Black newspapers and photographers as well as archives and communities groups all over the country.
