LIMA (Reuters – Two people were drowned at a northern Peru beach after high waves in many coastal areas were reported following the eruption of an underwater volcano, Tonga, in the Pacific Ocean.

Two people drowned on Saturday at a beach in Lambayeque, Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense(Indeci), stated in a statement.

On Saturday, the underwater volcano in Tonga burst, prompting evacuation orders and tsunami warnings in Japan. It also caused huge waves to several South Pacific islands. Images on social media showed waves hitting homes along their shores.

Indeci reported that 20 Peruvian port were closed temporarily as a precautionary action due to warnings about the volcano causing unusually high waves.

Peruvian police stated on Twitter (NYSE : ) that two bodies were discovered by Naylamp police station officers. According to the tweet, “The waves were unusual” in this area and had been made unsuitable for bathers.

Television images revealed that several houses and businesses were flooded in the coastal regions of northern and central Peru.

Peruvian Navy reported that there was no tsunami warning for the Pacific Coast.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that waves greater than one meter travelled along Japan’s coasts, and advised people to flee.

Social media footage showed waves breaking into homes on several South Pacific islands.
