BEIJING (Reuters). Ticket sales for the Winter Olympics that will start on February 4th will be restricted to “targeted groups” of people. The organising committee announced Monday in the latest setback in COVID-19.
In September, organizers stated that no international observers would be allowed to the Games. This was in line with COVID-19’s prevention policies which have effectively closed China’s borders from international travelers.
In Monday’s announcement, it cited COVID-19’s “severely complex” situation as well as the necessity to ensure the safety of Olympic personnel and spectators.
The committee stated that local spectators receiving tickets should adhere to strict COVID-19 preventive measures prior, during, and after the Olympic games. However, the committee didn’t provide any further details or specifics on how the tickets would be distributed.
China has managed to reduce COVID-19 local infections and is now trying to stop the spread of Omicron variant infections from spreading to other parts of China just before the Lunar New Year rush begins.
Olympics will be held in Beijing and Hebei, China’s neighboring provinces. The Olympics will be conducted in “closed loop”, which will separate athletes from other Games staff. Many participants will fly on specially chartered planes.
Due to COVID-19 schedule disruptions, the North American National Hockey League announced that it would cancel its participation in the Olympic tournament at Beijing last month.
