BEIRUT (Reuters – The investigation into the 2020 Beirut explosion may be facing further obstacles. This could prevent any indictments.

The investigation of Judge Tarek Bitar into the blast that killed over 215 people in Lebanon has been repeatedly suspended by suits brought against him by high-ranking politicians.

Hezbollah, an influential group and militia with armed forces, led Bitar’s removal campaign. He accuses Bitar of being biased after following some of its political allies.

A lawsuit filed by Youssef Finianos, former minister, against Bitar, is now in jeopardy after Judge Roukoz Rizk retired last week. Bitar was supposed to be hearing it.

A judicial source stated that “While the lawsuit is still pending, the investigating judge can not issue the indictment.”

The case cannot be decided, as Bitar is accused of making “a grave mistake” during the investigation, according to a source. Rizk has reached mandatory retirement age, so a replacement must be found.

Lebanon’s politicians often choose judges, and Nizar Saghieh from Legal Agenda suggested that they could leave the position vacant while the case is pending.

It could be a stumbling block to the investigation.

Bitar’s enemies accuse Bitar of being biased and overstepping his authority. Bitar’s supporters view his bold efforts to bring senior officials in the country to justice.

Due to an additional lawsuit, the investigation has been temporarily halted.

On Monday, families of victims of explosion protested in front of Beirut’s judiciary headquarters to demand a faster investigation and the prompt replacement of Rizk.

Kayan Tlais lost his brother in blast, and stated that they want justice.

Hezbollah, along with its allies, had boycotted cabinet meetings for the past three months. They claimed they want Bitar to be removed. The group announced that they would end the boycott on Saturday, just a few days after Rizk had retired.

Crisis Group’s Heiko Wimmen said that lawsuits are “legal theater” and would cause further harm to public confidence in the country’s institutions.

He said, “It is very clear that Judge Bitar won’t be permitted to summon anyone. Let alone indict anyone.” “Whoever wants this investigation not to move anywhere is the one who succeeded.”
