REUTERS/Stefan Wermuth/File photo(Reuters) – Credit Suisse (SIX.) On Monday, Antonio Horta Osorio was made chairman by SIX. This followed an investigation of his conduct and personal conduct by the board of Swiss Bank.
Axel Lehmann will replace him, having joined Credit Suisse’s board of directors in October to lead its risk committee after a string of scandals.
These are just five facts about Lehmann.
CROSS TOWN JOINER
Lehmann (62), joined Credit Suisse’s board of directors in October 2021, to take over as head of the Risk Committee. Lehmann left UBS, a Swiss lender that has had a more recent record than its rival cross-town.
Lehmann, who served as UBS’s chief operating officer from 2009 to 2015, was promoted to the executive ranks. He was named UBS’s chief operational officer in 2016. This post he held for 2 years, before becoming president of Personal and Corporate Banking and President of UBS Switzerland from 2018 to 2021.
A CAREER IN INSURANCE
Lehmann had a twenty-year insurance career. He worked briefly for Swiss Life, before he was promoted to a number of high-ranking positions at Zurich. Before becoming Zurich’s chief Risk Officer between 2009-2015, he was the chief executive for the European and North American operations of the insurance company.
DIGITAL DEVELOPER
Credit Suisse drafted Lehmann to help with its risk management, however the bank may be interested in Lehmann’s interest in digital.
While working at UBS, his role was to help establish digital factories in Zurich that would develop and launch new online platforms for UBS clients.
Also, UBS announced in early 2013 that it would be closing one fifth of its Swiss bank branches. The pandemic had shifted to online banking.
SWISS NATIONAL
Lehmann is Swiss citizens, which means that the lender has broken a tradition in which its chairman or chief executive is either a Swiss national. CEO Thomas Gottstein is also from Switzerland.
Lehmann, who also holds a PhD from the University of St. Gallen is now an adjunct professor.
STATEGY
Lehmann stated that he doesn’t think he will ask the bank for a change in the turnaround plan set by Gottstein or Horta Osorio.
Lehmann stated to Reuters Monday that the strategy was not in discussion and added Gottstein is “absolutely central”.
