REUTERS/Shelby TauberWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A rabbi was one of four Jewish congregants held captive in a Dallas synagogue. He said that he and other men managed to flee after he tossed a chair at the hostage taker. Then he rushed to get out.
After a ten hour siege at Congregation Beth Israel’s synagogue, Colleyville (west of Dallas), Texas on Saturday, gunfire broke out and all four hostages were freed. It’s not known if the gunman died by his own hands or was taken hostage by FBI hostage rescue teams.
FBI identified the suspect as British national. He knocked the door of the synagogue during Sabbath prayers.
Walker went back to prayer and said that he had “heard” a click. Although it could have been anyone, it turned out to be his gun.
Six hours of intense negotiations, including help from Malik Faisal Akram’s family, saw one hostage be released unscathed.
Walker was held still captive along with two others. Walker claimed he received hostage training from FBI to determine when and if he should try to escape.
Walker explained, “When I saw an opportunity, where he wasn’t in a great position, I made certain that the two gentlemen still with me, (and that), the exit wasn’t too far away, and I was ready to go.
They were told to leave. “I threw my chair at the gunman and headed towards the door. All three of us were able get out the other side without firing a single shot.
After the FBI’s hostage rescue group raided the synagogue it led to Akram’s murder. Two teenagers were taken into custody by police in England for questioning.
