The Communication University of China launches virtual version on Baidu’s metaverse

One of China’s major universities has taken its business to the metaverse, making it the countries first academic institution to jump on the fast-rising trend.

The Communication University of China has tapped on Baidu’s XiRang platform to replicate its physical campus on the metaverse. The digital campus hosted an award ceremony and anniversary celebration for the institution on December 26. Both virtual and physical persons hosted the event.

The virtual campus can be explored by metaverse users using either a VR headset, a mobile device or a PC.

According to BTC PEERS Chinese tech giant Baidu, (NASDAQ:), began officially testing the metaverse app called XiRang back in December. The app was later opened to all users on December 27 and used to host the company’s annual flagship developers’ conference, Baidu Create.

XiRang, literally defined as the “land of hope,” is a non-blockchain metaverse platform developed by Baidu.

Virtual universities are gaining popularity, likely due to the worldwide pandemic. Meta Platforms, formerly Facebook (NASDAQ :), partnered last month with VictoryXR VR headset manufacturer to create 10 new metaverse universities in the US. Similar to the Stanford University opening its first VR classroom in November for interaction and remote learning, it also launched its first VR classroom.
