Lockdown party allegations facing UK PM Johnson -Breaking

LONDON (Reuters).-Prime minister Boris Johnson has apologised to Britain for his attendance at a “bring you own booze” event at his official residence. This was during Britain’s first coronavirus locking down. A probe is now underway.

British media reports that 11 events took place between April 2021 and May 2020 at Johnson’s 10 Downing Street home or at other departments of government.

Sue Gray, senior civil servant is heading an inquiry. The date for publication of her results has yet to be announced.

Nov. 30, 2009 – The first lockdown Christmas party report

The Mirror newspaper reported that Christmas parties were held at government offices including Johnson’s office in Downing Street during December 2020 when these gatherings were prohibited.

Later media reports included a picture of Johnson holding an online Christmas quiz with his staff. He was seated beside an official adorned in tinsel.

Dec. 1 – Johnson denial

Johnson replies to parliament when Johnson is asked about reports of December 2020’s Christmas party by Labour Party leader. 10.”

Dec. 7th – Video showing staff laughing about the party

ITV (LON.) News published a video of Johnson’s employees laughing during a fake news conference about how to present a Downing Street gathering.

Allegra Stratton (then Johnson’s press secretary) says in the video: “This fictional party wasn’t socially distant. It was a business meeting.”

Dec. 8: Johnson offers his apology, and the aide steps down

Johnson says this to Parliament: “I apologise completely for the offense (the Stratton Clip) has caused up the country, as well as for any consequences it may have.

Since these allegations surfaced, I have been assured repeatedly that there wasn’t a party to the investigation and that COVID rules had not been broken. If those rules are broken, there will be disciplinary actions against all parties.”

Stratton resigns.

Dec. 9, 2009 – Detail of the inquiry published

According to the government, Simon Case will be leading an investigation into three of these alleged gatherings. The investigation is now expanded to encompass additional gatherings, according to media reports.

Dec. 17, 2017 – The lead investigator steps down

After hearing that an event had been held at his office, Case resigned. Gray is expected to conclude Gray’s investigation.

December 19th – Published photo of Garden Party

The Guardian newspaper published a photo of Johnson, along with 12 other people, drinking wine at Downing Street Garden. The Guardian claimed that the photograph was taken on May 15, 2020.

Dec. 20, Johnson declares that his garden party was work

Johnson stated that “those were people working talking about work” when Johnson was asked about the Guardian photo.

Jan. 10th – Johnson’s Aide publishes party invitation

ITV published an email from Martin Reynolds, Johnson’s Principal Private Secretary, to more than 100 Downing Street workers on May 20, 2020. Reynolds invites them to “after an incredibly hectic period… (to] some socially distant drinks in the No10 Garden this evening… and bring your own alcohol!”

ITV reported that there were around 40 people present, Johnson and Carrie included, although social mixing was only limited at the time to two persons outside.

January 12th – PM reports that he went to lockdown

Johnson informs Parliament that he was at a Downing Street Garden gathering on May 20, 2020. He apologizes.

He stated, “When i went into the garden… to say thank you to various staff members before I returned to my office to finish working 25 minutes later, I implicitly believed that this was an event at work.” According to his press secretary, Reynolds did not receive Reynolds’ email.

The Times reports that Johnson, a Conservative lawmaker, later said to them that he believed he was innocent and added “we’re taking hit for something we do not deserve”.

Jan. 13 – Police decline to investigate gatherings

The British police have stated that they will not be investigating the Downing Street gatherings until Gray’s inquiry uncovers evidence of possible criminal offences.

Jan. 14, 2-4 PM: Apologies to Buckingham Palace

Johnson’s office apologized to Queen Elizabeth for the late-night partying in Downing Street, on the day of Prince Philip’s funeral. This was in April 2021 when indoor mixing was prohibited. According to his spokesperson, Johnson was present at his country home that day.

James Slack (a former director in communications) was one of the parties. He apologised and said that the party “shouldn’t have taken place at the time it did”.

Jan. 17, 2019 – Johnson was a former aide who knew of the May 2020 party

Dominic Cummings is a former top adviser to Johnson and says that he would “swear under the oath” the prime minister knew of the May 20, 2020 party.

Cummings states that Reynolds was warned by him and at least one additional adviser. This warning was also sent electronically. Cummings says Reynolds stated that he would consult Johnson about the drink’s future, which he believes Reynolds confirmed.
