André Leon Talley, trailblazing fashion journalist, former Vogue creative director, dies at 73

Trailblazing fashion journalist André Leon Talley died Tuesday in New York at the age of 73.

He died on the anniversary of his death. Instagram account. We do not know the cause of death.

For decades, the former Vogue creative director and editor-at-large shaped fashion and trends but was never afraid to break the rules.

Talley was born in Washington, D.C. raised in DurhamNorth Carolina. He was raised by Bennie Frances, his grandmother.

Talley attended North Carolina Central University before earning a master’s in French studies from Brown University in the bellbottom years of the early 1970s.

He began his career at Vogue in 1983 as a fashion director, and then as a creative director.

He left Vogue in the 1990s, returned as editor-at-large, and left for good in 2013 to chase an opportunity to run Numéro Russia, a style publicationBut he left within a year. Talley was selected to counsel the First Family on Fashion as Barack Obama rose to the White House.

He was a judge and an arbiter on “America’s Next Top Model”, which aired for many years.

Talley looked intense and frightening, and his 6’6″ frame was a hint of the intelligence and wit behind his fashion criticism.

The social media post that reported his death stated, “Over five decades as an internationally iconic was a close confidant to Yves Saint Laurent Karl Lagerfeld, Paloma Pablo and he had a penchant in discovering, nurturing and celebrating young designer.”

Talley’s autobiography was notable for detailing his turbulent relationship with Anna Wintour, another Vogue fashion goddess. But it also brought a new understanding of his own childhood and attraction to fashion runways — and how race in America was a key to his fabric.

He spoke more than just sniping. This was to advocate inclusion in an area that is dominated by racial archetypes. His encouragement of the unrecognized achievements of Black culture in style was constant.

Rihanna. Janelle Monae. Kerry Washington. Lupita Nyong’o. He called it the Super Bowl for fashion when they walked together at the Met Gala. he cheered for them like a proud parent. Washington was told by he, “How beautiful your gown is.”

Since his childhood, he has always been a fan of formality and fashion pageantry. This was more than just church to him. It was Black church.

Talley stated, “The Black South’s church culture was almost like finishing school.” Garden & Gun in 2018.

According to him, one of his proudest moments was the moment Edward Enninful became British Vogue’s first Black leader. He said to Talley that he had paved the road.
