England looks to ease Covid rules while Europe is engulfed by omicron

The U.K.’s omicron Covid strain surged and Plan B was implemented. This means that facial masks will be required in all indoor public places, including shops, public transport and theaters. It is recommended that individuals work remotely if they can.
High school pupils have to wear masks in classrooms as part of the strategy to reduce the spread of the highly infectious variant, and Covid passes — which show whether a person is fully vaccinated or has a recent negative test — are required for larger venues.
After the measure was introduced, U.K. embarked upon a large booster vaccination campaign that has led to a drop in the number of cases. The booster shots are used to restore some of the Covid vaccine protection that was lost due to declining immunity and protect against the transmissible variant which has undermined Covid shots even more than the previous, the Delta strain.
The U.K. recorded over 200 000 new Covid infections per day at the height of the omicron waves in 2022. On Tuesday, it reported 94 432 more cases.
A spokesperson for the U.K government stated that “Decisions regarding the next steps are still finely balanced.”
The spokesperson stated that Plan B was put in place in December in order to stop the spread of extremely transmissible Omicron variants and obtain more jabs in arm. He also noted that 36 million booster shot have been given in the U.K.
The spokesperson said that although the Omicron variant continues to be a threat, it was not ending. While infections are still high, recent data suggests that the number of cases is beginning to decrease.
Many virologists believe that due to the increased transmissibility of the omicron variant, the increase and decrease in omicron case numbers should be much shorter and less abrupt than before. The variant is less easily transmitted, but it does not appear to have caused more severe illnesses. There has been no increase in the number of hospitalizations or deaths.
The Guardian reported Tuesday that Covid restrictions might be lifted by the British government in March. This announcement comes two years after Covid was first restricted in the U.K. in 2020. It is part of the government’s plan to help people “learn how to live with HIV.”

Europe’s omicron meltdown
England wants to reduce measures but such an approach is unlikely to happen in Europe. Omicron cases have soared dramatically.
France recorded 464,769 Covid new infections Tuesday. It was the largest number ever during the pandemic. Germany, however, reported more than 100,000 Covid cases Wednesday.
As Covid cases have increased in the Netherlands despite restrictions, frustrations are growing at the partial shutdown. On Tuesday, 31,426 confirmed cases were reported, just lower than a record tally of around 42,000 cases hit at the start of the week.
On Friday, Mark Rutte (the Dutch Prime Minister) announced that non-essential retail stores and hairdressers would be reopened. Rutte noted that the move was a significant one and that there is also a risk.
Rutte cautioned that the uncertainty surrounding the omicron variation meant bars, restaurants, and cultural venues had to be closed for at least January 25.
