Germany’s Merkel turns down U.N. job offer -Breaking

BERLIN (Reuters] – Angela Merkel, the former German chancellor, has declined an offer to work at the United Nations. This comes a month following her resignation as Europe’s most powerful politician, after 16 years of service.

Merkel, now 67 years old, called U.N. SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres last Friday to say thank you for her job and tell him she won’t take it.

German media reports that Guterres proposed Merkel as the chair for a U.N. advisory group on global public goods. This was one of his major reform projects. The body will be focusing on topics such as the ozone layer and vaccines, as well space debris.

Merkel is a conservative but has remained out of politics since Olaf Scholz became Germany’s chancellor.

A Der Spiegel interview revealed that she was working together on a political memoir. However, little else is known about Merkel’s retired life.
