(Reuters). Four people died, including a newborn, in a storm-swept part of Canada. Human smugglers could have also played a role, according to police on Thursday.

The bodies were found by police near Emerson, Manitoba (NYSE:), after American counterparts captured a group that had crossed from Canada. They also found evidence suggesting others may have attempted the same.

Three victims, including a boy and girl, were found dead on Wednesday on the Canadian side. They were located about forty feet (12 metres) from Minnesota’s border. Initial indications suggest that they were exposed to the cold.

Jane MacLatchy (Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant) stated, “We are very concerned that the attempted crossing may have been facilitated in some way and that these individuals…were left on their own during a storm,” at a Winnipeg-based televised news conference.

“These victims faced not just the cold weather but also endless fields of snowdrifts or complete darkness,” she said, adding that wind chill had brought down temperatures to minus 3 C (minus 31 F).

MacLatchy stated that authorities from both sides were working to verify details about what happened. It is still not known who the victims were.
