LONDON (Reuters] – Pandemic market darlings Netflix, NASDAQ:, and Peloton, NASDAQ:, saw nearly a fifth (or so) of their respective market value wiped off on Thursday. This is a signal, analysts say, that there are growing market jitters regarding the prospects for such companies.
Peloton shares plummeted 24% after its CEO stated that it is reviewing the size of their workforce and “resetting production levels”. However, the company denied it was stopping production temporarily.
Netflix’s shares fell nearly 20% as it predicted that new subscribers would grow by less than half what analysts had forecast. These companies, together with Zoom and Docusign, saw their shares rise in 2020 and 2021, respectively, because people all over the globe were being forced to remain at home due to the coronavirus.
Thanks to the vaccine rollouts and spread of Omicron COVID-19 in a less severe Omicron strain, many people are returning to normal. This is leaving Netflix and Peloton struggling for high-sales figures.
Data from S3 Partners shows that short sellers doubled their profit by placing bets against Peloton 2021, which is the third most profitable U.S. short.

Direxion’s Work from Home ETF fell more than 9 percent in the first three weeks of this year, as compared with a drop of 6% in the U.S. stock exchange Blackrock (NYSE)’s virtual life and multisector ETF which has declined more than 88%.
Europe’s lockdown winners face a tough time due to fears about the Omicron wave, which is causing anxiety. This adds to the growing stress on tech stocks and bond yields.
Ocado Online British Supermarket (LON :), HelloFresh Germany Meal-kit Delivery Company and Delivery Hero, which were the European champions of stay-at home in the first days of the pandemic, have so far underperformed the pan European.
