(Reuters) – Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation (NASDAQ:) Corp stated Friday it would increase the hourly wage of workers in Mayfield, Kentucky by 2 to $16.50 after the area was hit by a string of fatal tornadoes.

Kentucky tornadoes claimed the lives of at least 64 victims. They destroyed one Pilgrim’s Pride chicken breeding facility and severely damaged another, which was supplying farmers in Mayfield. This town, home to 10,000 people, suffered most of the severe damage.

For the Mayfield plant, which has more than 1,500 employees, the company negotiated a permanent increase in pay with the UFCW Local 22 workers union.

It stated that the total annual wage rise is $4.5million.

It also occurs at a moment when large staff shortages in the U.S. meatpacking market are due to Omicron coronavirus.
