U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar’s Texas home and campaign office were raided as part of a federal investigation into the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan and a group of U.S. businessmen that have ties to that nation, a senior law enforcement official said Thursday.

ABC News first reported the development.

Witnesses claim that Federal Agents were seen taking items out Cuellar’s Laredo home in Texas yesterday, while others were seen outside Cuellar’s campaign office.

Although the FBI did not mention the Democratic congressman in particular or offer details regarding the investigation Wednesday night, it acknowledged that the FBI had searched for him.

Rosanne Hughes released the following statement: “The FBI were present in Laredo’s vicinity of Windridge Drive, Estate Drive” according to Rosanne Hughes (an FBI spokesperson). The FBI can’t comment further on the ongoing investigation.

Cuellar’s Office released a statement stating that Congressman Cuellar would fully cooperate with any investigation after the FBI executed Wednesday’s search warrant. “He is dedicated to protecting justice and upholding the law.”

His office didn’t immediately respond to a Thursday night request for comment.

The senior law enforcement officer confirmed the existence of a grand jury investigation but was unable to provide details as to the specific focus of the grand jury and when it will meet.

Cuellar’s status as a grand jury target or subject to criminal investigation is not clear.

Cuellar is a former Texas secretary of state, lawyer and customs broker.

In 2004, he was the first to be elected to the House of Representatives. He also sits on the influential Appropriations Committee. Recently, he served as co-chair of Congressional Azerbaijan Caucus.
