PALO ALTO / Reuters Twitter Inc On Thursday, (NYSE:) announced that a new tool was launched by users to showcase non-fungible tokens as profile photos. This taps into the digital collectibles boom of the last year.

This feature is available to subscribers to Twitter Blue on iOS. It connects users’ Twitter accounts with crypto wallets, where they can store NFT holdings.

Twitter shows NFT profiles as hexagons. This distinguishes them from other users’ standard circles. Clicking on any of the images will bring up details about it and the owner.

Twitter like many other tech companies is eager to profit from crypto trends, such as NFTs. A type of speculative investment that authenticates digital objects, including images, videos and land, in virtual worlds, NFTs allows for the creation of new speculative assets.

Last year, the social media platform added capabilities that allow users to send or receive messages.

According to DappRadar data, sales of NFTs reached $25 billion by 2021. However, there was a slowing trend towards the end.

NFTs and Web3 technologies are being praised by their supporters. This allows users to create popular products online to generate income, instead of having these benefits accrue only to some tech platforms.

Critics deny the claim of decentralization. They point out that many of those services which are used to adopt these technologies, such as the six wallets made possible by Twitter’s NFT product, are funded by small groups of venture capitalists.

Jane Manchun Wong (security researcher) highlighted one link in her widely distributed tweet about the launch. It showed how OpenSea’s outage temporarily prevented NFTs from loading onto Twitter.

OpenSea has not yet responded to a request by Reuters for comment.
