(Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:), Monday announced injury statistics for 2020, showing lower-than-average safety levels in U.S. warehouses and a more consistent delivery record than its peers.

Amazon also reported that global employee injuries and illnesses that lead to time away from work decreased by 43%, from 4.0 last year. Amazon has never reported global incident numbers before.

These disclosures are in response to growing scrutiny about the labor practices of Seattle-based companies.

Recent reports by Reveal, the Center for Investigative Reporting, and the Washington Post showed that serious injuries rates in Amazon facilities were nearly double the industry standard. Amazon and other employers have been targeted by legislation regarding productivity quotas. A U.S. Labor Department Office recently started auditing the government’s response to the rising number of warehouse injuries during the pandemic.

It said that Amazon spent $300 million on safety improvements in the last year.

Amazon’s safety report for 2020 stated that there had been 6.4 incidents at U.S. warehouses in the last year, for each 200,000 hours of work. The report stated that the industry average was 5.5.

Amazon’s U.S. transport and logistics arm (which includes Amazon’s air hubs workers) had a 7.6 injury rate. The report stated that this was higher than the 9.1 industry-average. Amazon has been under scrutiny over deadly incidents that involved contracted delivery companies, but this is not part of the company’s tally.

Amazon reported that, in addition to other safety measures, it had developed technology with its partners, so that forklifts could avoid collisions, recognizing their distance from humans and structures.
