PARIS (Reuters) – Boeing (NYSE:) Co announced Monday that it will invest an additional $450 million into Wisk in support of the development of pilotless flying taxis.

California’s Wisk is owned by Boeing, Kitty Hawk and Google. It was founded by Larry Page (NASDAQ:). Wisk differs from other electric vertical takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL), but it focuses its efforts on autonomous flight.

Marc Allen, Boeing Chief Strategy Officer and CEO, said that Wisk is the biggest strategic advantage. He believes the aircraft will fly autonomously, and that the principles of flight are being incorporated at all stages of development.

This decision to jumpfrog an eVTOL-piloted aircraft generation being built by aerospace firms and startups independent of each other will lead to a delayed entry to service, rather than 2024 as most of the competitors planned.

Boeing refused to provide a time frame for the sixth-generation Wisk passenger car, although industry sources stated that it was planned to have it certified in 2028.

Boeing stated that the autonomous vehicle would become the first passenger-carrying vehicle in America to receive certification.
