OUAGADOUGOU, (Reuters) – Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore was taken into custody at a military base by mutinying troops, according to two security sources. This happened after heavy gunfire erupted around his home on Sunday in Ouagadougou.
On Monday morning, several armoured vehicles belonging to the presidential fleet were seen in the vicinity of the residence. One vehicle was splattered with blood. Heavy gunfire was heard in the neighbourhood of President Trump’s residence overnight.
As sustained gunfire rose from multiple military camps for many hours, the government refuted rumours that a coup was underway. The mutiny soldiers requesting more help in their battle against Islamist militants demanded more.
Sources in government could not be reached Monday morning. The militants’ frequent murder of civilians in West African countries has caused frustration. Some of them have connections to Islamic State (al Qaeda) and other terrorist groups.
On Sunday, protesters came out in support of the mutineers and ransacked Kabore’s headquarters. From 2000 GMT to 0530 GMT, the government issued a curfew and schools were closed for two days.
