TAIPEI, Reuters – Taiwan reported Sunday’s largest Chinese air force incursion into its air defense zone. The island’s defense ministry said that Taiwanese fighters were on standby to alert 39 planes in response to the new uptick in tensions.
Taiwan, China claims to be its sovereign territory, is complaining for over a year about China’s repeated air raids near Taiwan. These were usually in the southern part of China’s air defense identification zone (or ADIZ), which lies close to Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands.
Taiwan refers to China’s military actions in the vicinity as “greyzone” warfare. This is meant to wear Taiwan’s troops out by forcing them to scramble and to also test Taiwan’s response.
Taiwan’s ministry stated that the latest Chinese operation included 34 fighters, four electronic warfare aircrafts, and one bomber.
According to a ministry map, the aircraft flew over an area northeast of Pratas.
According to the ministry, Taiwan deployed combat aircraft in order to send warnings to the Chinese planes, and that missile systems were also used to watch them.
China did not immediately comment on the matter, but it has previously said that such actions were meant to protect its sovereignty.
Although it is not known what prompted China’s large-scale operation, U.S. naval forces and Japanese navy vessels have been conducting exercises in the Philippine Sea. This vast region includes the waters east of Taiwan.
According to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, these exercises were conducted by two strike group carriers who “conduct training to protect and preserve a free Indo Pacific”.
China has increased pressure on Taiwan to recognize its sovereignty rights. Taiwan’s government declares that it seeks peace and will defend itself against any attack.
Taiwan recorded 148 Chinese aircraft in its southern and southwest parts of the air defense zone during a period of four days that began on October 1, when China celebrated a significant patriotic holiday called National Day.
Taiwan reported Chinese air forces almost daily entering the same airspace since October. But the most significant number of planes was on Sunday, which is the first day that the incursions were made since October.
No shots were fired, and no Chinese aircraft flew in Taiwan’s Air Space. They did so in Taiwan’s ADIZ. This is a larger airspace Taiwan monitors and watches that allows it greater time to deal with any threat.
