TORONTO (Reuters), a convoy of truckers marched from Vancouver to Ottawa on Sunday, protesting Canada’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate for truckers. The industry claims that this would lead to fuel inflation and driver shortages.

Through a gofundme campaign, trucks under Freedom Convoy 2022 had already raised C$2.7million ($2.2million) to combat the mandate. According to the gofundme page, funds will be used for fuel, food, and lodging costs. It is anticipated that the convoy will arrive in Ottawa by Jan. 29.

Trucking is essential to maintain a smooth flow of goods because more than half of C$650 billion ($521 trillion) of goods traded annually between Canada and America travels by road.

But as many as 32,000, or 20%, of the 160,000 Canadian and American cross-border truck drivers may be taken off the roads due to the mandate https://www.reuters.com/business/canada-us-supply-chain-still-could-face-disruptions-due-vaccine-mandates-2022-01-13, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) estimates.

CTA however stated that they do not support demonstrations on roads. The only way to cross borders on commercial trucks is through vaccination.

Canada has imposed a vaccine mandate on the trucking sector starting Jan. 15. Unvaccinated Canadian truckers who re-enter Canada from the United States will need to be tested for COVID-19, and then quarantined.

Driver shortages are further expected to fuel red-hot inflation https://www.reuters.com/business/canadas-annual-inflation-rate-hits-48-dec-highest-since-sept-1991-2022-01-19 which is running at a three-decade high, industry lobby groups gave said.

Since November’s announcement, Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada has stood firm against industry pressure to postpone the mandate.
