WINDSOR (England) – This year’s celebrations of Queen Elizabeth’s seven-decade rule will obscure a more sad reality: The British monarchy is under attack in ways unimaginable over the past 70 years.

From the U.S. sex abuse court case https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/what-we-know-about-virginia-giuffres-lawsuit-against-britains-prince-andrew-2022-01-04 facing son Prince Andrew to her grandson Prince Harry and his wife’s allegations of racism https://www.reuters.com/article/britain-royals-meghan-int-idUSKBN2B003I in the royal household, rarely has the family of 95-year-old Elizabeth, who became queen on Feb. 6, 1952, faced such scrutiny and damaging headlines.

The queen is so respected that the institution, which dates back almost 1,000 years, seems safe. It is uncertain what the future holds.

Graham (NYSE.) Smith is the chief executive of Republic anti-monarchy organization, who has increased its campaigns to Reuters.

“Once you’ve seen the final days of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the only thing that is certain about the future direction of public opinion are the following:

While an act by parliament is all that would be required to abolish the monarchy it would still be highly probable that there would need to be a referendum.

While the fortunes and fortunes of her ancestor Norman King William I have changed over the years, the conquest of England by Norman King William I 1066 in 1066 was a landmark event. However, Britain has been a republic since 1649 when King Charles I was executed.

Lows were experienced during Elizabeth’s reign due to the failures in three of her children’s marriages, and 1997 deaths of Princess Diana, the first wife of Prince Charles.

The public support for previous jubilees and Prince William’s 2011 marriage to Elizabeth, future king, were highs.

Buckingham Palace stated that the celebrations to celebrate Elizabeth’s platinum anniversary in June will provide “national moments for reflection on her 70-year service”

Unable to respond to questions regarding the long-term fate of the monarchy, a spokesperson for the organization declined comment.

ROYAL EXTINCTION

The queen is seen by supporters as stabilizing and they point out the economic benefits that the monarchy provides Britain via tourism. The institution’s opponents argue that it is an undeserved bastion, partly funded by taxpayers but undermined by the behavior of some members.

Andrew, 61, reputed by media to be Elizabeth’s favourite of her four children, was stripped https://www.reuters.com/world/us/prince-andrews-legal-team-decline-comment-us-court-decision-2022-01-13 of his royal patronages and military titles this month as he fights allegations of sex abuse in a U.S. lawsuit.

It is an event of extinction for the monarchy. Camilla Long of the Sunday Times wrote: “You can’t tell everyone for a thousand years that you’re exceptional and then everybody discovers in real-time in a court case that you aren’t.”

While Prince Harry and Meghan, the Windsors’ most beloved member, have resigned from their royal duties and moved to Los Angeles, where they are launching a series of barbaric attacks against the family and Buckingham Palace.

Charles has come under scrutiny after Michael Fawcett, his right-hand man and close confidant for decades, quit https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk-prince-charless-right-hand-man-quits-charity-role-after-honours-report-2021-11-12 his job running one of the heir’s main charities amid allegations he had offered honours in return for donations.

Fawcett did not comment publicly on these allegations.

Penny Junor, royal biographer, said that it was unclear whether these scandals are sufficient to convince enough Britons to believe there should be no monarchy.

WHAT IS OPINION SHIFTING

According to a December survey, 83% of respondents viewed Elizabeth positively and 83% believe that the monarchy should be retained. However, there are troubling signs regarding the royals.

Last November Barbados ditched https://www.reuters.com/world/prince-charles-travels-barbados-celebrate-creation-republic-2021-11-29 the queen as head of state, Charles is much less popular and support among younger people appears to be waning, with polls suggesting a majority under 30 favour getting rid of the monarchy.

Margaux Butler (a 20-year-old student from Windsor), said, “I don’t think it holds much value any more.”

I hate the idea of Charles becoming king. While I enjoy the royal family overall, I dislike Charles as a person.

To end the monarchy, however, it will require more than just apathy toward Charles and deplorable tabloid headlines regarding Andrew or Harry. These papers rarely feature negative articles on Charles, Camilla and William.

Some Britons find it less appealing to have an elected head of government due to the scandals that embroil Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Donald Trump’s turbulent U.S. presidency.

Establishment is also firmly behind royals.

The ruling Conservative Party does not appear to be willing to end the monarchy. However, the Labour Party was defeated in 2019 elections partly due its ex-leader’s lack of patriotism.

Johnson noted last year, following the passing of Prince Philip’s husband, that Elizabeth had “helped her wife steer the monarchy” so it was an institution that is vitally important to our nation’s happiness and balance.

Even the royals recognize how to adapt to an ever-changing world.

“While politicians were subject to “brutal” rejection by voters at the poll box, Elizabeth said that “for us, as a royal family however, the message can often be harder to understand,” in 1997 speech.

I have tried my best to understand it through our years together and my time as queen. We will, together, attempt to achieve this in the future.
