McDonald’sAccording to Michael Lavery, analyst at Piper Sandler, McPlant is much more popular than originally thought.

The participating restaurants sold about 70 of the plant-based hamburgers they created in December Beyond MeatEach location in the initial small testing of the menu item by the chain.

Fast-food chain McPlant began to test the McPlant Burger in October in eight locations in order to gauge its impact on operations. The McPlant burger was officially launched on February 14. the chain will expand the test to about 600 restaurantsLearn more about consumer demand in San Francisco Bay or Dallas-Fort Worth.

Lavery informed clients Tuesday in a note that the test sites were selling three times as many McPlant hamburgers than Lavery initially predicted. A McDonald’s average restaurant sells around 110 Big Macs each day.

Beyond may win despite the small sample, Lavery stated that there was more interest in Beyond’s product than anticipated. McPlant initially predicted a 75 million-100 million increase in Beyond’s U.S. revenues.

He wrote that while we think test stores received an increase from exclusivity (drawing sales from some nearby stores that didn’t offer it), but that sustainable, repeat sales will settle down at a lower rate than initial McPlant sales. Initial McPlant sales might prove closer to 8-10% or $170-215M annually (annualized).

Beyond Meat believes that a McPlant hamburger launch across the country is an opportunity to wow consumers and increase revenue from McDonald’s. Wall Street analysts are now bearish about the stock because of competition and declining U.S. grocery store sales.
