China Approves AMD’s $35 Billion Acquisition of Chipmaker Xilinx -Breaking

Global chip shortages are getting worse as automakers from three continents join tech giants Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. to flag production cutbacks and lose revenue due to the crisis.

(Bloomberg). — Chinese regulators granted permission for Advanced Micro Devices to purchase Xilinx from NASDAQ:, opening the door to one of the most significant deals in the global semiconductor market.

In a statement, the Antitrust Watchdog stated that the State Administration for Market Regulation approved the agreement with some conditions. The agency stated that these conditions include a requirement to support and work with local Chinese partners. It had been approved by regulators from the U.S. and Europe as well as the U.K.

Xilinx’s shares gained more than 6% in pre-market trading in New York. The deal was announced by AMD in 2020. AMD competes against Nvidia (NASDAQ 🙂 and Intel (NASDAQ 🙂 when it comes to making graphics and computer processors. Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su’s signature deal was intended at the time to help AMD re-double efforts to challenge arch-foe Intel for the lead in chips. 

Xilinx will be AMD’s first acquisition of programmable silicon maker. It also gives AMD a boost in its market share for cloud-based components.
