Investing.com — Google (Alphabet Inc. NASDAQ:) shares rose 2.4% after CNBC reported that Google has created a division dedicated to building a company around Blockchain applications.

CNBC stated that the move was to increase the prospects of the company in healthcare and retail industries. CNBC also said that the success of the company could allow it to move beyond advertising and expand its storage and computing services business.

Richard Widmann is Google’s Head of Strategy for Digital Assets at the Cloud Unit. He stated that the cloud team plans to employ various Blockchain experts.

CNBC quoted Widmann as stating that there were “things you can do to decrease the frictions customers experience when paying for centralized cloud using cryptocurrencies.”

Bloomberg published last week that Shivakumar Venkataraman would head the blockchain unit. He is an engineer vice president of Google. It also reported earlier in the week that YouTube was exploring NFT features to help video producers.
