Meituan lets users pay for offline services

Meituan, which will let users pay with China’s digital Yuan for offline services, such as hotel reservations and tickets to movies, will be available. The latest technology company helping the People’s Bank of China to push China’s digital currency is Meituan.

This is yet another example of how technology companies are helping promote China’s digital currency, as China’s central bank aims to grow its use.

In the twelve months ended September 30, Meituan saw more than 660,000,000 transactions. This is China’s largest food delivery company. However, it also offers many offline services like booking hotels.

The Beijing-headquartered company is the latest in a line of tech companies to help promote the digital yuan, which is also known by its official name Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP).

The People’s Bank of China began working on the digital currency in 2014It’s intended to replace coins and cash in circulation. It’s not like bitcoin, and it works in a very different way.

In China, the internet giant was founded earlier this month.
