WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. government announced on Thursday that it will grant additional 20,000 H-2B Visas in the first half fiscal year to help ease America’s labor shortage.

According to the Departments of Homeland Security and Labor, visas will be granted for employers in America that are at risk of irreparable harm if no workers can be found before March 31 2022.

Alejandro Mayorkas from Homeland Security said that they provide employers with resources and support to help them sustain their businesses, while also expanding legal routes to the United States.

DHS announced that the additional visas would be available for employers starting Jan. 28, 2022. This comes at a time when there is record-breaking job growth and fewer labor force members.

DHS indicated that 13500 visas will be available for H-2B-eligible workers returning to work who were granted H-2B status or received an H-2B Visa during any of the three previous fiscal years. 6500 more visas will be available to people who are from El Salvador or Guatemala.
