BRUSSELS, (Reuters) – Facebook’s unit WhatsApp was given until February 31st to clarify changes in its privacy policies and assess whether they are compliant with EU consumer protection laws following complaints by consumer groups. The European Commission stated on Thursday that the European Commission had been informed of the matter.
Eight members of the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), along with eight others, complained to the EU executive as well the European network for consumer authorities. They claimed that WhatsApp had unfairly pressed users into accepting its new privacy policies which allow it to share data with Facebook.
Didier Reynders from the EU Justice Commission said he was concerned and has requested WhatsApp to explain the policy.
He stated that WhatsApp has up to February 31st to return to them with specific commitments about how it will resolve our concerns.
There are two areas of concern: whether or not the company has provided sufficient information regarding its new terms-of-service and if notifications prompting users agree to the terms and privacy policies are fair.
It expressed concern about WhatsApp’s use of personal data to exchange with third parties, or other Facebook/Meta company users.
WhatsApp spokeswoman said that the company is looking forward to explaining to EU Commission how it protects user privacy and complies with EU law.
