YouTube’s CEO announces that YouTube is exploring NFT features for video makers

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced Tuesday that the company is embracing digital collectibles in an open letter.

Wojcicki stated that company will consider adopting many Web3 tools including NFTs as a way to make creators more money. She described the current innovations around Web3 driving tools as a “source of inspiration to continue innovating on YouTube.”

There has been speculation about how NFTs might be used and what they will look like on the platform. However, there is no set deadline for potential NFT integrations. A spokesperson for Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ) declined to give more information on the alleged NFT features.

It is possible that NFT-related artworks could be featured by digital artists using tools available on YouTube. Or, the NFT functionality may somehow be embedded into YouTube users’ profiles.

YouTube’s latest foray into NFTs mimics that of fellow social media and content-adjacent platforms, like Twitter (NYSE:) and Meta, who have gotten involved or at least expressed intent to dabble in the world of NFTs. Wojcicki stated in the letter:

These past 12 months have seen a number of new opportunities to increase the connections between creators, their fans and non-fungible crypto tokens (NFTs). We’re always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube.

She also affirmed YouTube’s priorities on gaming, shopping, music, and Shorts, confirming that YouTube Shorts (a TikTok competitor) has already generated 5 trillion views since its debut in late 2020.
