BEIJING (Reuters – Threety four new COVID-19 infected Olympic personnel were discovered on Sunday by the Beijing 2022 Winter Games organising board. They included Natalia Maliszewska from Poland, who is a candidate for the short track gold medal.

Thirteen of those were either athletes or officials from teams who had tested positive upon arriving at the airport Saturday.

23 of the total infected people were new arrivals at the airport, and 11 were already inside the closed loop bubble, which separates the public from event staff in order to reduce the spread.

While the loop permits Games participants to freely move between their accommodation and Olympic venues using official transportation, they cannot move around freely within the city. All Games staff, media personnel, and other stakeholders are subject to daily testing.

Maliszewska, eighth Polish-born athlete who tested positive for the disease, has been placed in isolation by the Polish Olympic Committee. Maliszewska joins other infected speedskaters Magdalena Czyszczon (also in isolation)

Maliszewska will be competing in the 500m heats on Saturday. If a positive test is performed and the athlete does not show any symptoms, they will be released from isolation.

Australia reported that its COVID-19 team had a positive test, but didn’t say if it was an athlete of coaching staff.

Beijing Games organizers warned that there will be more incidents in the coming days, as Beijing enforces strict measures restricting mobility and contact between Games participants with local residents.

China, unlike many other countries, has decided to be a co-existence country with COVID-19. It is now imposing a strict zero tolerance policy that cancels nearly all international flights. Olympic athletes must travel directly to Beijing on charter flights.
