MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Russia will demand NATO to clarify its intentions to implement key security engagements. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Sunday that Russia had asked NATO for clarifications after Moscow claimed the alliance’s response was not sufficient.

Russia has made it difficult for the U.S. and its 57 member Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, to reach a deal over security in the region. Russia has gathered around 100,000 soldiers near Ukraine and denied plans to invade.

Russian President Putin claimed that NATO and the United States had not met Moscow’s major security needs in its standoff with Ukraine on Friday, but it was open to continuing talks.

Lavrov stated on state TV that “Today through the Foreign Ministry we are sending an oficial request to our fellows in the Alliance or the OSCE, asking them to explain (their] commitment not to increase their security at the cost of other security.”

They should also explain why they don’t want to. Lavrov stated that this will be an important question when deciding our future proposals. He will then report back to Vladimir Putin.

Russia is seeking from the West security promises that are legally binding, not only promises. Lavrov stated that Russia would seek to have security “on the whole European continent with full and equal consideration for Russia’s legitimate needs.”

Russia demanded NATO withdraw troops and arms from Eastern Europe, and to bar Ukraine from joining NATO. Washington and NATO allies deny this position, but they say that they are open to discussing other topics like arms control and confidence building measures.
