Atlanta DA Fani Willis asks FBI for security help after Trump calls for protest

The FBI was asked by Atlanta’s highest prosecutor to perform a security assessment of the courthouse and other government centers. This request came just one day after former President Barack Obama died. Donald TrumpDemanded that supporters organize the “biggest protests” they’ve ever seen in places where he is being investigated.

Fulton County District attorney Fani Willis is currently investigating Trump’s possible criminal interference in the 2020 election. She wrote to the FBI, stating that Trump’s rhetoric “increased security concerns this weekend.” The reality TV star-turned-politician spoke at a rally Saturday in Conroe, Texas.

Willis sent a Sunday letter to the FBI Atlanta special agent. She wrote, “We must cooperate to keep the public safer and ensure that there is no tragedy in Atlanta like what occurred at the United States Capitol January 6, 2021.”

Trump supporters invaded Capitol, disrupting the joint session of Congress which was confirming the President’s appointment on January 6. Joe BidenTrump has made many false allegations that he had not won the 2020 election.

In Willis’ letter, Willis cited Trump’s statement that if Trump is elected president in 2024, he will pardon Jan. 6 crime rioters “because they are treated so unfairly.”

Willis mentioned the scheduled start date of the special grand jury on May 2, in her letter to FBI, saying that she had an obligation “to ensure the safety and security of those who visit and work at the Fulton County Courthouse and the adjacent Fulton County Government Center, as well as the surrounding area.”

These buildings were close to Georgia State Capitol and Atlanta City Hall. She also noted that a federal circuit and appels court is located nearby.

Willis requested an immediate risk assessment for the county courthouse/government center. He also asked the FBI “to provide protective resources including intelligence and federal agent.”

She stated that Trump made numerous references to her probe, and other topics at his rally.

Trump stated that if these racist, brutal, and vicious prosecutors did anything illegal or wrong, then I wish we were going to have one of the largest protests in Washington, D.C., New York, Atlanta, and other places because our country is corrupt and our elections are corrupt.”

Parallel investigations are being conducted by the New York State Attorney General and Manhattan District Attorney into Trump’s business dealings.

Willis’ request for information was not responded to by the FBI.

Rep. Liz Cheney (a Wyoming Republican and vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, riot) took aim at Trump in a Twitter early Monday.

Cheney stated that Trump used language that he knew caused Jan 6 violence. He suggested he would pardon Jan 6 defendants (some of whom were charged with seditious conspiracies; threatened prosecutors; and admitted he wanted to reverse the election). He would do it again, if given the opportunity.”
