REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton/File Photo(Reuters) -New York Times Co announced Monday that it acquired Wordle for an undisclosed amount. Wordle is a web-only word-game which has recently seen a surge in popularity.
This acquisition will enable the New York Times digital content to be expanded as they strive for 10 million subscribers by 2025.
A player has six chances to guess the secret five-letter word of the day using only the smallest number of guesses.
Wordle, which was first released October 2012 by Josh Wardle (ex-Reddit software engineer) will remain free. There will not be any changes in its gameplay, according to the NYT.
The Times stated, “Wordle now plays a role in that daily experience. Giving millions of people around the globe another reason to trust The Times to provide their daily news and daily life necessities,”
NYT is using puzzles and games as a way to maintain its readership on their websites and apps. This strategy has been successful because more of their readers are using their tablets and smartphones for daily news and entertainment.
In its third quarter, 135,000 people joined the company’s games, cooking, and review site Wirecutter.
