Americans have rediscovered their enthusiasm for traveling, surpassing the levels seen since the widespread introduction of Covid-19 last year. It is evident that Americans now enjoy travel more than the hesitation caused by the various omicron/delta virus strains.

Nearly 82% of people are in a “ready to travel” mindset in 2022 — a 5-percentage-point increase in just the last two weeks, according to a survey of 1,200 American travelers published Monday by Destination Analysts, a tourism market research firm.

These findings show that potential travelers seem to have mostly brushed aside the shock caused by the contagious Omicron variant. This virus pushed the caseloads up to unprecedented levels, and disrupted travel plans during the winter holidays season.

Where Americans want to travel abroad

Erin Francis -Cummings, President and CEO of Destination Analysts has been conducting bi-weekly travel sentiment polls in the United States since March 2020. She added that “the ready-to go mindset is basically the highest it has been” and called the indicator a key indicator of optimism.

The survey found that 92% of the respondents plan to travel at least once in the next twelve months. They expect to go on an average of 3.3 leisure trips in the next 14 months. surveyThe survey was conducted from Jan 26 to 28. Over three-quarters have dreamed about and planned travel just in the last week — a rate unseen since last summer.

The mid-year 2021 date when large swathes of Americans were eligible for the Covid vaccine, had already seen travel enthusiasm rise. The delta variant slowed down that optimism, as did omicron concerns around Thanksgiving.

Francis-Cummings explained that “early summer 2021” was the preceding apex. We are beginning to see the apex once again.

“Omicron certainly had an impact. People cancelled and postponed their trips,” she said. The impact of Omicron was not as great or long-lasting as that of delta.
